The 10th Down Syndrome World Swimming Championships were held in Albufeira, Portugal from 17th – 22nd October 2022 and Team GB demonstrated the importance of teamwork superbly as they were crowned Champions of the World! Every member of the 30 strong squad contributed to the success of the team with many achieving personal best times. GB swimmers collected 50 medals in total – 18 gold, 22 silver and 10 bronze.

In the T21 competition, a particular highlight was when Zac Lacey and Jemima Rudd-Jones were both crowned world champions in the 200m Butterfly. In another gruelling event, the 400m Individual Medley, Helen Thompson finished in first place and Mark Evens proved himself to be a champion distance swimmer with gold medals in the 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle races. 16-year-old newcomer, Amalia Freeland, was the top female Junior, also winning two silver medals in the Open Women’s competition.

As ever, our Mosaic swimmers shone. With seven gold medals and three new World Records, Ellen Stephenson finished second in the Women’s competition. Alex Edwards was placed third with a new World Record in the 200m Butterfly and Harvey Stonebank was second in the Men’s Mosaic competition.

At any international event, the relays are always a highlight. With slick takeovers and solid swims, Great Britain’s men’s team gained medals in all five of their events. The women’s team picked up two silvers and a bronze and our coaches and supporters’ team also finished second in the end of Championship ‘Fun Relay’.

From the Opening Ceremony to the Gala Dinner, Team GB excelled in their determination, dedication, resilience and support for one another.   A true demonstration of Team Spirit!
